THIR, András (Andreas) (I) Born 1765, died 1798 Bratislava (Pressburg) Slovakia Son of Antal Thir, below. Probably student of János György Thir (II), below. ‘Leeb/Amati model’ with more substantial corners than earlier makers of the family. Very significant maker of the ‘Pressburg School’ (Bratislava known as Pressburg up to 1919). Finely worked scroll; well cut and described soundholes. Substantial and well-textured brown varnish.
