John Dilworth

TEUFELSDORFER, Peter Born 1784 Vienna Austria, died 1865 Budapest Hungary. Pupil of F. Geissenhof in Vienna. Established independently in Budapest from 1808. Gained further experience through examining classical instruments after Geissenhof’s advice, and became chair of the luthiers guild in Budapest. Highly influential in the Hungarian school. Succeeded by his pupil J. Kabinger. Other pupils included F. Nagy, K. Brotko and J. N. Schefferná. Prolific maker of violins, violas, cellos, double basses, bows, guitars, and even a bowed guitar which he devised in 1823. Violins on a Stradivari-derived model with slightly raised arch; also some Brescian style instruments known. Characteristically short corners and fairly broad-cut soundholes. Very fine craftsmanship, with full orange-yellow varnish, evenly applied.
