STONEMAN, Henry Born 1856 Zeal Monachorum, died 1933 Exeter UK. Apprenticed as a joiner and cabinetmaker, worked for ecclesiastical building company. Took up violin making in 1903. Established at 3 Union Terrace, St Sidwells, Exeter. Self-taught, much preoccupied with repair work. Completed about 12 new instruments. Stradivari and Guarneri models. Fine workmanship. Commercial varnishes supplied by Whitelaw and Dr. Inglis Clark. Each instrument individually named. Henry Stoneman / Exeter / No 10. Fecit 1923 / Devonia
