SMITH, William Worked circa. 1780 Sheffield UK. Established at Sycamore Street, Sheffield. One cello known: Walmsley model with fine golden-brown soft textured varnish. Embellished with ‘Sheraton’ style circular shell motif inlaid in the centre of the back between the upper corners and beneath the fingerboard, and a similar ‘shell’ in oval frame in middle bouts of back. Prickmarks around the volutes of the scroll and purfling inlaid in the pegbox sides. [Hill Archive]
