ROMNEY, George Born 1734 Dalton, Lancashire, died 1802 London UK. Celebrated portrait painter and amateur maker. Pupil in violin making of his father John Romney below. Made at least one intricately carved violin, showing superb skill but of personal model with slightly eccentric soundholes, which survived within the family until 1894. Expressed a plan to establish a violin making centre in his home town of Dalton, Lancashire, encouraging local amateurs and enthusiasts to attend. This seems to have come to nothing. [BVMA]
