John Dilworth

McGEORGE, George Born 1785, died 1821 Edinburgh, Scotland UK. Said to have worked with Matthew Hardie c.1796-1800. Established independently 1801. Henley gives a detailed description of finely worked violins on Stradivari models with spirit varnish of a rose-red tint. He also claims that many of his instruments have been sold as the work of Hardie. Rattray doubts this and states that, although the name appears in Edinburgh archives, there is no known connection with violin making. Signed internally: ‘G. McGeorge Edinburgh’ G. McGeorge / Maker. Edinburgh. 1817
