John Dilworth
MARSHALL, John Worked from c.1750, died 1764 London UK. Established in New Street, Covent Garden, possibly the successor to Benjamin Cooke whose instrument making and music publishing business was the ‘Golden Harp’ at that address until shortly after 1745. Very fine workmanship on the Stainer model; superior to most other London trade work of the period with no features unduly exaggerated. Fine dark golden-brown varnish. Many instruments relabelled as Florentine. One label recorded with the added inscription ‘Good beef a penny a pound, but trades all very bad’. Marshall. London. 1759 Johannes Marshall / Londini. Fecit 1750 Johannes Marshall / in vico novo juxta Covensam Hortum / Londini. fecit 1757 [BVMA]
