BENTE, Matteo Born circa. 1578 Maclodio, d. after 1661 Brescia Italy. Arrived in Brescia about 1634, when his workshop is first recorded in the Contrada S. Antonio. Recorded as a violin and cittern maker from 1637 to 1661, that is after the passing of the plague that ended Maggini’s life. Typically Brescian in style, but of variable form and quality. Reliable examples are rare. One was used by Tartini, another by Ole Bull. Large model. Soundholes set very low on the table. Fine reflective varnish of golden-brown colours.
