THOMÄ, Jacob Born 1848 Györ (Raab) Hungary, died 1917 Boston, Massachusetts USA. Established as a clock maker in Vienna. Self-taught violin maker following the success of his daughter as a violinist. Early work using wood from a local church. Gold medal awarded in Vienna, 1888. Emigrated to the USA 1891. Established in Boston assisted by his son Alexander. Over 250 violins, 30 violas, and 15 cellos. Personal model named ‘Thoma Solo Violin’. Also copies of Cremonese models. Fine workmanship. Jacobus Thoma / fecit / Viennae anno 1880 Jacob Thoma / Maker.
